What's easier? Breeding Guppies or Silver Mollies

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have a 35 which includes a pair of micky mouse platies(which have not bred in 3 months unless my angels ate them),a pair of red tail mollies,6 zebra danios,6 tetras(assorted)3 dwarft frogs. And lots of plants and hiding places. I was want to start breeding whatever i can in that tank. Should i have more platties and mollies in order for them to breed?Oh ya the angels are not in there anymore. Thanx

My little 5 gallon tank consist of the following: I didn't know what to stock it with so I just freelanced it. I have 1 platy, 2 cory cats, 2 chinese algae eaters, 3 small silver mollies. I plan on getting a bigger tank very soon. But for now, do you think my 3 mollies will produce babies or if I put in there 3 guppies will they not stress and produce? Do these fish all get along ok? Talk to me

What kind of Cory cats do you have?
Platies and other live bearers are community fish, that do better in numbers, i think.
Chinese algae eaters become territorial and will probably outgrow your tank. with two of them in there, they will agitate the other fish. Plus, they will stop eating algae once they get older/larger.
cories also are shoaling/schooling fish. they do best in atLEAST groups of 3. to really bring out their habits, you should have around 6. Remember, they say 3:1 female:male ratio for the guppies or mollies.

Everything should get along except the CAE (Chinese Algae eaters).

Bon chance

okay, I must say that you have mentioned mixing livebearers without mention of sex. You must make sure that you have a male live bearer with your females. live bearing mollies, guppies or platy have a gonopodium which looks like a stick at the bottom of their body which acts like a penis. This is how you will tell female from male. They will try to stick this into the female to fertilize the eggs. you will most likely see this behaviour. you may already know this but I did not see it mentioned so I thought I would let you know.

also looking to breed guppies, generally a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio.. 10 gallon'ish tank.. what kind've filtration should i have on the tank, as to not suck up the babies?? When would i expect to see babies?

whats with all this whats easier to breed guppys or blahhhh, over and over!! GUPPYS ARE BY FAR THE EASIEST FISH TO BREED OFF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jesus, no one has any common sense anymore. just put some marbles or whatnot as your substrate, and through them in, thats it, no big secrets. And filter wise use a sponge filter.

i think theyre even
but scince the guppies are much smaller than mollies i would go with guppies
i used to breed them
i had 10g with about 3 males and like 10 females
i was set

Guppies are easier, but both are pretty easy (Male, Females, and just add water) Molly fry are bigger and aren't really eaten as much as Guppy fry.
