Why don't you just go collect your own? I just went down to the Green River with a saw and brought back probably 60-80lbs of water worn, waterlogged roots.

Just snapped this terrible photo. Not all of the wood i shown.

I wasnt sure if it was legal to just go pick stuff up off beaches/river beds? If so I might just go do that.

Don't quote me on this, but as long as you're not in a National Park or a refuge I don't think you'll have any problems.

Is it legal to collect natural materials on BLM public lands?

Except in developed recreation sites and areas where it has been prohibited and posted, it is permissible to collect reasonable amounts of the following for non-commercial purposes:

* Commonly available renewable resources such as flowers, berries, nuts, seeds, cones, and leaves.
* Nonrenewable resources such as rocks, mineral specimens, common invertebrate fossils, and semiprecious gemstones.
* Forest products for use in campfires on public lands.

Other materials and the collection of materials for sale or barter to commercial dealers require a permit.

From the Bureau of Land Management website.

I'd just be carefull where you do it. Streams/rivers would be a better choice than some of our lakes. Unfortunately, some are really nasty. As a for instance, having used to live on Silver Lake in Everett, I wouldn't use anything taken from that lake in my tank!
