sometimes it releases that stringy stuff as defense or if it is stressed and on its way out as yours has passed when they die though they look like they melted into a blob on the bottom

I'm not sure if the Anemone was this white when you purchased it, but it's a good idea to avoid white anemones in the future. It's usually a sign of it being bleached out.
