whats in my 34g tank & begginer needs help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1x rainbow shark
1x bala shark
1x pictus catfish
2x minnows
1x betta fish
3x goldfish

First off, a few people in here have said that you can't keep goldfish with your tropicals- That is not true. Goldfish and Koi can survive up to 85+ degrees. 85 degrees is the temperature you heat their water to when they are sick, and they thrive in these waters better than people would think. For your tank, they are not ideal, as it's been rule of 1 goldfish per 30 gallons due to their bio-load and size.

For your tank, I would keep the Rainbow Shark, the minnows, the betta, and that's it.

The rainbow shark will soon be too small for this tank, and a 55 tank will soon be out of the picture as well...

I would just go to 75 gallons, and be safe than sorry.

Just because goldfish can "live" at these temperatures it doesn't mean they are comfortable. Goldfish need alot of oxygen the warmer the water the less oxygen there is. Warm water can also reduce there immune system. Goldfish and tropical fish have different diet needs also. Just because it can be done doesn't mean you should do it. You can keep an Oscar in a 10 gallons but doesn't mean you should.

I said it is not ideal. And warmer water is actually better for goldfish as their immune system is always working and doesn't go dormant like when in colder waters.

Okay i've had everything/have it in this list.
Your rainbow shark is nibbling on things because it doesn't have enough room to have it's territory unbothered. If put in a bigger tank (55 gallon) he will leave everything alone, just get him a rock/cave he can stay in

As for the bala sharks, 55 gallons is not nearly enough for 3 of them. They get at least 12 inches in length, and will not be able to stay in there. You may want to sell those and get something smaller.

Plecos are good to have, but get only one. They get quite large.
Tetras are also a nice choice, but they are schooling so you need a min of 5-6.

Angelfish are iffy. If a full grown angel doesn't have enough room, he will attack everything in your tank (from experience, he's killed a fair share of my fish)
If you want 2 or more, you need at least a 30 for 2 full grown.

As a beginner, I would start with tetras, goldfish, minnows, and the catfish.
Good luck!

DO NOT get a common Pleco, they will only eat algae until about 4-5 inches in most cases, they grow to 2 feet, and they are poop machines. Also, they may try to suck the slime coat off of your fish, which in some cases kill the fish. If you really need to get a Pleco, get a bristlenose.

I have a common pleco that is about 7-8 inches, and he eats algae, and the occasional shrimp pellets. But he has NEVER disturbed any of my fish, and he will ONLY suck the slime coat off if he's starving.

But yes, he's a poop machine.

Plecos CAN grow up to 2 feet, but when kept in an aquarium, that rarely happens.

Hahaha, tell that to the dozens of customers I get that say I have a huge pleco wider than my tank (55gal-75gal aka 12"-18") Common Plecos will grow large but for the dozens of people I have that have BIG plecos I have another that said just what you did "it ate algae and one day it just died, I don't know why" (oh and when lights out plecos come out to play)Now onto the OP

A suitible stock list for a 55gal would be

1xRainbow Sharkminnow
4xPictus Cats

That's it there you go no goldfish, minnows or Balas oh and move the Betta to a 5gal
