hey guys, just catching up with threads now - out of town for the weekend in baltimore, so my access is limited.

that being said, yeah, i decided to clarify on the species in question once i realized from a few sources (PM and posts) that people were thinking these were indeed tropical gars as the initial theories had proposed. juvie gar ID is definitely not a cake walk (for any of us)!

checked on them this morning before leaving and it looks like they all ate (they were hit or miss the day they arrived, but it has been quite the stressful set of trips i am sure). will continue to update and notify you guys of the post-study plans for the fish well in advance. thanks for all the comments so far!--

ok back from the east coast and moving forward with these little guys (all eagerly ate upon my return today - roommate was kind enough to take care of them while i was away).

this week they will be transitioning into a miniature version of the spotted gar experiment setup (see attached). will update as i get the chance--

hahaha you're definitely right john! just about to reply to your message (thanks by the way!) - we have several larger tanks (big rectangular and circular fiberglass systems) that we use for big fish will definitely be a large undertaking from here on out!--

i'm hoping to do my first update of the "GARmy" thread soon...never had the chance to do so before, haha.

not a whole lot has actually changed at the lab currently - about 45 spotteds in holding pattern (MI,LA,IL fish) and some trops at another lab (soon to be brought back to my place for consolidation with other trops). all the new Cubans are here at The Tank (smaller-scale setup AND too valuable to leave at the labs when i can monitor them almost 24/7 here).

richard has some trops that will be part of one of the projects (3/4 of the trops at the other lab are his), and he has a bunch of gars at his home and work too.

i think it may be quite realistic to say that SE Michigan is the gar biodiversity hotspot on the national scale, haha --

CBG project will probably be about 2 months, give or take depending on resources (time, funds, etc).

i don't remember reading what the actual goal of the project was. other then to gether general info on them.

unfortunately we can't get into many details about any of the research just due to the nature of academic research, etc. rest assured when we are able to expound on things further we'll post. in the mean time, we'll keep things updated as much as we can!--
