Say what you have and then why.

For me it's just sponge and carbon.

I always have sponge, but I use carbon when I do a large water change/meds or anything that clouds the water.

-Plastic scrubbies, biomax, pre-filter : For Bio-filtration
-Carbon sometimes, Clearmax sometimes : For cloudiness/meds
-Sponges/filter floss - Mechanical/water polish

In my sump I have 3 inches of coarse sponge to catch the large particles when the water enters the sump (changing to 3 x 100 micron socks though).
Next xhamber is empty.
The chamber before the pumps has 4" of fine sponge with 2" filter mat on top. Considering 6" fine sponge and 4" filter mat though.

-5 inch coarse foam - catch all that turtle crap
bioballs - surface area for bacteria or whatever
more bioballs surface area for bacteria
ceramic rings- surface area for bacteria to grow
bioxmax -surface area for bacteria
thick fluval foam pads to trap dirt
fine filter floss to fine up the water
PRE filter (rings? ) fluval -- to trap dirt

I have 2 fluval 405s between them I have

- 5 boxes biomax, bio is king
- 500ml - purigen, makes water pretty
- 500ml - hypersorb, in delivery does samething as carbon but regenerable
- sponges that came with filter

I only use sponges and biomax rings

I will occationally add a polishing pad to clean out small particals tho

sponge and ceramic rings.

4 square feet of mechanical
