What's in your FX5?

I am trying to set up my new FX5, but I'm fairly new to these things and have never set one up before. I can figure out the plumbing and see how it all works, but what do you guys have in each tray? The "kit" came with 3 polishing pads, a box of Zeo Carb, and a box of what looks like plastic noodles. Where do these go? Don't the carbon rocks have to be in something so they don't go everywhere and tear up the pump? What else is in the other tray/s? Thanks.

Just fill all three trays with bio media.

I use scoria/lava rock works a treat, nice and porous and can get tonnes for cheap .

I have ceramic rings and bio balls in mine...

ceramic rings in both of mine, also have one of them attached to a turbo twist 12 uv sterilizer.

nothing but ceramic rings in all three trays...... it's been running 6 months straight now.... my ammonia and nitrites are always zero....


I use a HOB for mech filtration

No carbon then? How can I use this for mechanical filtration also? The only thing I have right now is the HOB and it gets clogged quickly, so I wanted the FX5 to do some of the mechanical filtration too.

I have 1 polishing pad and the rest ceramic rings.....Plastic noodles? they might be the orange straps that hold the 3 trays together....
