I know thier are many posts on the forums about this subject however through my searches Ive noticed some members removed the foams that come with the fx5 and place it with pot scrubbies?

Im trying to make my fx5 very effective even if its running on a 50 gallon tank.

I have the regular foams that come with the fx5 as well as all the baskets filled with pond matrix. However I fell that it still not 100% effective. My foams seem to be permentely tinge brown from nls pellets...so I guess I will have to buy new foams. I was thinking also replace the top basket with nothing but pot scrubbies and the matrix on the next trays...will that make a difference? I feel that the pot scrubbies will nbe more like an added mechanical filteration to help keep debri off of the matrix in the next trays. Or any better ideas?

Also does anyone know where to get the orange "handles" that hold the baskets together? I got this from my aunt months ago and she lost the "handles".

Thanks A Million

I would try out the biofoam that comes with the FX6 and put it into the top tray. I have 2 FX5s on my 120g all baskets filled with biomax.

Seachem Matrix seems to be a very good choice if you want to go with efficient and cheap. It does the job and is very cheap.

If you really wanted to go over board check out Cermedia.com and look at their marine pure products. They are supposed to be the best media out there.
Or Biohome Ultra from pond guru on ebay is great too. I personally am using biohome ultra mini and they are very porous.

Well i guess im doing something right as have two trays filled with pond matrix still debatting on the top tray. Will be getting fresh foam pads for the sides tho...anyone use pot scrubbies as mechanical filterstion? If not i will just fill with matrix

Has anyone tried completely removing the sponges and filling that area with biomax or other biomedia? Maybe stick a single polishing pad on the top tray. Also, does everyone put their media in the filter lose or do you put it in stockings? Mine is losing, but I have it a realy pain to rinse the biomedia with tank water when cleaning it out. Grouped together in stockings would be much easier.

I think if you would remove the outer filter you would get a bunch of crap in your media. I'm using pond matrix, and have it lose. I just pull the trays out and pull the outer filters out and dump the trays in tank water. I really don't get any crap in my pond matrix though.
