Whats in your FX5?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Have mine filled as follows and I run 2 of them on my 345

Top tray- fluval pre filter rings
Middle - biomax and 200ml purigen
Bottom - blue polishing pad along with a bunch of other sponges
Outsides - all stock fx5 sponges

I run a heavily stocked tank and clean them every 3 months or so.

The problem with using pot scruubies on the top layer is too much crap gets through the 1st layer and builds up on the bio media on the 2nd and 3rd trays, i just tried this out and notice my tank always had stuff floating around, so now i use cotton or filter pad on the top tray to catch everything, water looks much better now

The most efficient way to utilise this filter in it's standard formation is to fill all trays with matrix / pond matrix media !

I then use a blue pad on top of that media in the top tray. You can also add another above the media in top of the second tray if you wish. The second blue pad method I have found increases the time between maintenance a little more. I have been using this setup for years and it works great on my arowana tanks.

^^^This, I did the same for a year and a half until I replaced them with a sump
