I beg to differ.I have a couple of these on my boat.Generally fish with rod and reels but when the big guns are called for. Out they come.

Awesome answer. However, that being said, you can buy used but ugly Penn 109 reels with an older, ugly fiberglass blank/wood handled rod that will catch almost anything you can think of. I've seen stuff like that at garage sales for $10-20, and they will outfish and outlast many newer combos. It's all relative.

If you buy crap, it will fish like crap.

Good question. It takes both. Depending on the type of fishing, I've had reels gutted and poles break...I'm gonna go with the Rod.

depends on the target species. If the pressure of the fighting fish exceeds the strength of the line, you can thread the line thru the guides and then put the terminal tackle on, tying it to the first guide. Then you can "strip" the line between the handle and the 1st guide like a fly rod. I don't think you can go with just the reel. I vote rod. With Sunfish I've used sticks with 5 feet of line on it with a hook on it.
That was when I couldn't work a spinning reel and every one I used self-destructed in a massive crow's nest.

Also it matters what you are fishing for in flyfishing to if your fly reel sucks you no relief from a larger fishes pull so it takes longer to catch it if it you even catch it. Also what do you really fight the fish with the reel or rod.

considering the fact that all my reels are getting worn and crappy(not high quality) i'd go for reels since poles are equally worn and crappy but the reels are what make it more of a pain to fish.
