What's next for the OC? Wolf IDs? Payaras revisited?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I vote for hoplias as well. I think I really want to get one eventually, and it'd be awesome to have a guide beforehand to help me on decide which one.

Payara is another great idea, they're definitely a popular choice recently.

Wolves would be a heck of job to do. I mean 18 species plus countless variants. Even though only 10 or so species are in the hobby in would still be quite a large undertaking if it is to be detailed.

Payaras or a condensed hydrocynus guide instead of like three

Please elaborate on what you mean by a condensed guide for Hydrocynus. I really can't accurately present the info without the 6700 words I used in that guide.

I vote Payara then wolf, payara will be quicker as most of the info is readily available just needs to be cleaned up.
Great job with the dorado thread BTW.

Sent from my LG-P930 using MonsterAquariaNetwork App

Thanks for the props. :)

Boulengerella!!!

Pike characins is something that hadn't even entered my mind. Not a bad idea! :D

This is what has me balking at tackling Erythrinidae. I'm seeing sixteen species in three genera, with only a few of those actually in the hobby. This appears as though it would be a buttload more work than even the ATF thread. That combined with the fact that wolves aren't 'silver tooth fish' which means they aren't exactly my specialty.

If we're gonna make a wolf fish thread happen, I'm going to need a LOT more help than I received with Dorados. I can do a lot of the sciencey crap, but sixteen species plus variants plus invalid taxa is a lot more to deal with than four or five. I'll tackle this project if I have some dedicated helpers that are willing to tackle tasks for me.

As for payaras, I'm probably just going to reformat the sticky to match my ATF and Dorado thread for easier reading. I'm not really gonna mess with xander's content, just the way it looks. I'll also add some new data, such as Sean's new payara pectoral fin origin observation.

Thanks for the input guys.

just do the most basic wolves such as the main subspecies. Aimara, mala, curupira, erythrinus.

If you include Ery sp. peru and sp. tahuayo, yes

If you can contact jelly or braveheartcali, they will be a HUGE help. I found a good read for the lacerdae complex (H. lacerdae, H. curupira, H. intermedius, H. australis, H. brasiliensis). btw I used complex due to a lack of a better word.http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/pdf/oyakawa-mattox-2009.pdf

If we do this, I want it to be comprehensive. If we're gonna do it, we gotta do it right. ;)

That .pdf is a great resource, that's the type of stuff I'm looking for.

I've been talking with jelly for a while now but he's a busy man. He has confirmed that he's willing to help though. His website will definitely be in my list of references for a wolf fish ID thread and he'd definitely be getting a shout out in the acknowledgements section of the fist post!

It's been a while since I did any scientific research, but I'd be glad to help if there's something you think I could be of assistance with... My last attempt got mixed review from my college professor. Well, it wasn't my research, but the execution of my experiment.

Regardless, let me know. I'm on board.

After looking at it again, I see what you mean. There was way too much in the stickies about ATF. That's cleaned up and fixed now.

Ok guys, I'm going to start cleaning up the Payara ID thread tonight. Most of the data is already there, I just need to format it to match the ATF and Dorado posts for the sake of easy reading.

I'm gonna go start a wolf fish discussion thread so we can start trying to hammer that one out. That should be fun lol... I just hope some of you guys are on board to help with this one!
