What's on my Florida Gars eyes?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Both eyes seem to have cleared up entirely after a 30% water change, slight bump in temperature and salt.

OK guess I need not say anything then.... Was going to suggest isolation and Large frequent water changes. I just went through a similar issue (pretty close to exact actually) with a TPG and it cleared up very quickly with just a few very large water changes. In looking at the fish closely it seemed to have been a secondary fungal / bacterial infection due to a tussle with the Gator in the tank. Nothing to worry about and was quick to recover.

did you dechlorinate your water? If not, do so by stocking the water for 24 hours with an open lid to evaporize the chlorine..

Also increase your oxygen and if possible put the affected gar in a different tank without any companions..

My Gars get these on their eyes every now and again and like you have dicovered a large water change clears it right up. I have tried to let the WC slide a few times to keep with a maintanace schedule and the condition would either stay the same or get worse. 30-40% WC and the next day most of the dicoloration is gone which leads me to believe it is more of a water quality issue than an injury.
Like you I have a large bio-load due to some large fish in one contained system and even with weekly maintanace things can go south in a few hours requiring an extra WC.
My feedings are done on a schedule and all food is measured each time, no idea why this happens when everything is run like clock work, just glad it is an easy fix when it does.
Side note: all times this has happened to me I never removed the fish with the eye discoloration from the tank, never raised the tank temp or ever added meds, just a simple water change and all was back to normal in a day or two.

Thanks for the insight guys. I was going to isolate the day after making this thread, because the mass water change and relocating the eel took most of the night (was exhausted) and I was sure the tank would be okay for a few more hours with the florida in it. The next day (yesterday) the web-like lines were gone and there was just a little cloud, and last night the eyes appeared 100% normal, so I'm hoping all is well.

Things get crazy during feeding and there is the big driftwood, so possibly a wound/scrape got infected and the water quality at the time made it worse. Anyways, hopefully the water change and salt was enough to keep things well.

Just a note but there is a difference between what you are talking about and what Micheal's fish was having an issue with. The internal discoloration thing is a different matter. Treatment is roughly the same but for the case of a secondary infection it is indeed a good Idea to start prep for isolation if the condition becomes relevant enough to remove the fish.

Just want to make sure there is an understanding that there is more than one problem that often pop up in gars eyes.
