Nice lists everyone, but keep in mind the original topic was fish that haven't been available recently. I see quite a few fish listed that my LFS even carries.
SA cichlid guys, hit me with something I haven't even hear of! :)

Big or small? Peaceful or aggressive? There's lots of cool SA stuff that I've only learned about in the past year or so.

One is Chaetobranchus flavescens, which I had for a short time before they inexplicably died. They never really did take pellets well so I think they probably just wasted away. Being filter feeders, they really need a constant supply of tiny food like brine and krill to thrive. A lot of people say they're the easiest to adapt to pelleted food (compared to the other filter feeders, Chaetobranchopsis), but mine would only chew it for a long time and then spit it out. They are large-growing fish but mine only made it to 5 or 6". Here's a video of mine fighting:

I also would love to get my hands on a bunch of the non-Apistogramma dwarves, but I've found that big cichlids are easier to keep than small ones. It seems like it should be the other way around, but I have the best luck with bigger fish. If I do end up with a bunch of little tanks one day, I'd love to try Biotoecus or Taeinacara candidi.

There's also Mazarunia, which seems to be an oddball South American. To me it doesn't look much like any other SA cichlid species.

Great stuff Ryan. I had not heard of a couple of those. I did spawn Dicrossus maculatus and had no luck with Laetacara dorsigera. I keep CA cichlids now, but always like learning about new (to me) species.

I'd really love Dicrossus, too! I haven't kept those but you have no idea how many times my finger has hovered over the Bid button when I see them online.

Speaking of Dicrossus and rare SA fish, one fish that I haven't seen in the trade in about eight years is Crenicara punctulatum, which basically looks like a cross between a Geo and a giant Dicrossus! Jeff Rapps had them on his list a few months ago and I got excited that I'd finally be able to own them again, but unfortunately the import fell through and the fish did not come in. I kept them a long time ago and they were a peaceful, cool SA to have.

Now that you mention it, I haven't seen these around for years either. They used to be so common too, you couldn't turn around in a LFS without seeing them in at least three tanks. But I always prefered the Crenicara latruncularium and kept hoping they'd turn up in the hobby.

Have C. latruncularium ever been available in this country? I've only ever seen them online. It'd be nice to see either of them in the hobby again. I kept C. punctulatum when I first moved out of my parents' house in 2003. They never spawned for me but I only had three of them. I kept them with keyholes and angels. At the time, a lot of online vendors had them on their lists. I haven't seen them anywhere since about 2005.

At one time, wasn't Dicrossus lumped into the Crenicara genus?

I know someone that brought some back from a collecting trip, but since I haven't seen them since so I'm guessing they never were bred.

And yes, Dicrossus used to be Crenicara before Kullander started carving up New Worlds like the Thanksgiving roast.

I saw a tank of C. punctulatum at House of Tropicals (LFS) a couple of years ago. Should have grabbed some (they were ~$6 each) but I figured that they'd be around... Which was a bad assumption :(

I kept them back in the day and they're interesting enough...peaceful but get bigger than the others.

Ryan - Dan Ye has (or had) some Chaetobranchus in stock. I'm tempted but don't want to risk my big one killing them all. Cool fish, though. Mine eats everything but doesn't really get fat. The Chaetobranchopsis had to eat all of the time. All of the 4 I originally got eventually faded out, although I had I think a pair for the better part of 3 years (even brought the male to a fish show).

I'm suprised that more folks aren't into Chanchitos. They're all over the board in terms of temperment, size and color. My favorites at the moment are some facetum from Laguna de Diario, which is the type location where Darwin (!) described them. They're big mean ones. The scitulus-types are a lot milder and smaller. Like convicts and spilurum/cutteri, just about every body of water in Uruguay (and Argentina) has a "different" one...
