What's rules do you use to determine min. Tank requirements?

I like the fact that you guys have logic behind your tank requirements. Just to throw a few scenarios out at you, what are the minimum tank requirements for a pair of salvinis? Also what requirements for a pair of nics?

Salvini I'd do a 55 as minimum because they are small but highly aggressive and can hit 6-7 inches. Nics I'd do 75 because they can get bulky

I base my own rule on, minimum 10 gals per inch at adulthood.
ie a few 1" neons could work in a 10 gal.
A 12.5" adult trio of cichlids should not be in anything under 125 gallons.
A 10" pair of JDs, minimum nothing under 100 gals.
For growing out, this can vary, but once they are adults, these are my personal limitations, and if I can't provide them, I don't get the fish.

For me personally, in most cases, if I have to even think about if the tank is big enough to house the fish, then it isn't.

Size, shape, habitat and activity are all important considerations, a potentially-12" clown loach is going to want and need a heap more space than a potentially-12" bichir.

What is the minimum size tank you would keep 7 male midas in? Specifically what dimensions?

That's more than I thought. I was thinking 8 * 3. I can't do 9*4 so I may just get rid of a couple "ugly" ones.

One thing to consider too is how frequent your WCs will be. You can house a 12+ in fish in a standard 90 gal, but if you only plan on a 25% wc once a week you will have problems.
