do they really even work? how? ive got a bunch lying around and was wondering if i should use them. where should i put them in the tank?

Bio-balls uses surface area to promote bacteria growth (a biological filter). They work well because they are designed to offer lots of growing area without taking up alot of room overall.
The best set up to use them in is having water run over them - such as a tower or use in a sump.

with bio balls make sure to have a good pre filter such as a micron bag otherwise it will just turn into a detritus collection area and cause you to have nitrate problems....they do provide lots of extra surface area if used right though

Biological filtration is the best way to cycle the tank.
And the bioballs are an excellent place for the bacteria to live.
(We call them Nitro-bacteria here).

A pre-filter's only purpose ist to get rid of the big particles. You could just as well used other methods (don't remember english names, sorry)

Bioballs are used in all proffesional aquaculture all over the world.
Here we have the worlds largest Salmon-industry, and they all use
the K1 bioballs.

This picture shows a proffesional filter for Koi, the principle of this filter is
to pump highly oxygenated water through the filter, because the bacteria
need a lot of oxygen to live so they can eat the bad stuff...

A good description of how it works here:

I have used this method with great sucsess with my pond, perfect water-conditions..
And also have planned to use it in a sump as this drawing shows.
(Have heard from others that tried, that it work perfect)

i dont have the filter for them (died) but would just letting them float in the top of the tank be a bad idea?

It really wouldnt do much

They need the flowing water to be of use.

Bio Balls are great for Beneficial Bacteria growth, so YES you should use them. you can use them by putting them in your wet & dry filter underneath your eggcrate so that the water would drip over them, or you can also just throw them straight into the water in your sump.

But if you do not like to use the bio balls that you have lying around you could just ship them to me, i will make good use out of them! :naughty: :woot:
