I dont use them so I cant comment. If I was to buy one I would probably try one of the
wet/dry models
http://www.eheim.com/prowd.htm

In your case I would suggest an XP3 and just run crushed coral and live snails in the media baskets, nothing else. You will get max flow rate with that and it will be maintenance free. Just make sure you have fish that eat snails!

I have to agree with Potts 100%. From the tittle of the thread, it sounds like wet/dry filters are not in the running. They are far superior to canister filters in that you do not lose your bio-filtration every time you clean the filter. Also as a cost cutter, you can make a sump filter from a used fish tank. It will also take the work out of filter cleaning.

I too purchased some snails and placed them in the baskets...I own a xP3 BTW...My lfs sells different types of crushed coral, dry or wet...There some that are bagged in saltwater...The wet type supposingly has live bacteria, but it is saltwater...Can I buy this stuff and just rinse it???

The fluval fx5 boasts a good flow rate, but by the sounds of it, the pump is not as powerful/torquey. Even ducati, the most ardent FX5 supporter here, admitted they clog and he needs to change the media fairly frequently.

Thank you for those kind words- LOL actually I mentioned that when using the FX5 polishing pads (fine & medium). They are circular disks that fit perfectly inside the baskets.
If you use them it will fill up in about two weeks (at least for me). I dont need them because the tank is crystal clear without them.

Jesus christ man, aqua clears are not even canisters, and no aqua clear is enough for a 180.

.

How about 2 AC 500 on a 180 ? I had just that for about 10 years...I think I posted pictures of that tank early on on my career here. Worked fine for me with big fish (see pictures). None of the fish died from poors conditions. They were either eaten by others or killed by nut case fish- LOL

Seriously? 2 AC500s on a 180?

Was it lightly stocked? They have good flow rate, but I just wouldn't have thought they'd have the media capacity to deal with a tank that big, unless it was a really light stocking level.

I have never used a HOB at all actually, how are the AC500s? How good are the pumps? Do they clog easily like internals?

I ran (2) AC500's on a 200g for almost a year...Biological filtration was taken care of by a FilStar xP3...I'm getting a 180 myself...I plan on putting two AC500's and a DIY wet/dry...

I had a 240 years ago with 2 hob filters that did well. But I like the silence of these canisters. I NEED clean water and will have nothing less. Thanks for all your insight. Keep it coming.
