whats the best chemical media to keep odors and nitrate low

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think I allready have found a con to the nitra zorb, one pouch 7.5 oz i had with a lot of water flow on it was very brown whitch means it worked due to the low nitrate levels. BUT have soaked in salt for two hours rinced and its still brown, so i made a fresh bowl of salt water an soaked for 7 hours. And its still brown .
Hummm it should be clean and back to the off white color.
So it dose not look like salt cleans it off very well.

Here is a crazy idea freshwater clams. They are natures filters. Havent done much research on it yet but that my be your answer and it is natural. If I remember right from what little i have read on it they are supposed to use the nitrates.

I have read good things also. But would like someone with first hand experience. Before I order 2liters for 85 bucks.
I'm still testing nitrate zorb. But have found a problem with it. Salt dose not seam to recharge as well as I had hoped. But I'm still testing it.

I've been using purigen for a couple of months and like it. I've noticed that my nitrates are about 25% lower with it, so it's not a miracle cure but it does help. I've also found that it does recharge easily in a 1:4 mix of bleach water, just make sure to rinse it very well and I do a final soak with dechlor before I add the bag back into my filter. On my overstocked 110 african tank I had to do the first recharge in just under a month, but was able to go over two months before the second recharge. Now that everything is under control I should be able to go much longer before recharging again.

How much purigen are you using? what size tank, and how heavy is the stock load?
