What's the Best Fancy Goldfish Species for 75 Gallon Aquarium?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I keep a 300 and a 75 with gold fish. The best place to get them is out of Hawaii. I only by from steve now as his fish are superior bar none. He even has true yellow. His prices are high but the fish do not have any inbreeding issues, illnesses and they are always spectacular or he will not sell them. he has many articles to review to help you out. Simply amazing! www.raingarden.us. He has had his fish featured in Practical Fish Keeping and Tropical Fish Hobbiest I cannot say enough about buying from him as he takes his business very seriously. Most goldfish are abused and neglected and full of bacterial disease. I have never had an issues with any I have ordered from him. My favorite is the Watonai Have fun!

My favorite are the celestials (my profile pic). Too funny to watch.

i had a 75g with 2 orandas and 2 pearl scales. we had them for many years. they were the size of half dollars when we got them. when i traded them to the lfs they were each the size of a softball. they were beautiful and i actually regret trading them.

I would also recommend ranchus. I usually chose the best swimmers over color. Spending money on good quality is definitely worth it. also best to purchase at one time or quarantine new guys. they are usually loaded with worms if they come from asia.I have 7 in a 60gal. Fed every other day. During spring summer fall they live in a outdoor pond. Good luck.

I have kept goldfish for many years and am quite specific to what I even like after owning different ones.

First of all, single tails would not work in a 75g, they get too big, and it's simply not enough swimming room (Common, Comets & Shubunkins). I had one Common several years ago and ended up selling him to someone with a pond (he was 9 inches at 2 years old!) and the stress level in the tank dropped drastically for the 3 fancies that were left; he was just too aggressive for them in his need to swim.

That being said, the fish I absolutely love are fantails and ryukins. Ryukins unfortunately are known to suffer from swim bladder problems and/or constipation more than other fancies; this is because of their body shape and too much inbreeding.

Just remember how big even fancies can get and that you should provide more filtration than what is actually recommended because they are very dirty fish. I run an Eheim Pro 3e 2078 on my 75g.

Just for comparison, this is Lisa, she's my 8.5 year old fantail.

Here she is in QT as a baby in July 2004:

And this was her last year (Oct 2011) in my hand:

And more recently:

She is presently 7.25 inches (or was that 7.5 lol) from head to peduncle (that's right before the back fins start) and 365 grams.
