what's the BEST food for oscars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used the 'staggered' approach for my Oscar Brick.

6 small meals 2"- 4"
4 small meals 4" -7"
3 meals 8" -10"
2 meals 10" -12"
12" - now 1 meal a day. He's currently over 14".

He grew at a 2- 2.5 " clip a month till about 8 inches, then less.

Up until he was 2 years old he ate 90% Hikari pellets, all types. Started turning away from pellets as he approached a foot. Ate nightcrawlers for a couple of months then lost interest.
Now he's a insect eater. He loves his mix of crickets, shrimp, and mealworms. I dust them with reptile vitamin powder. He only eats about 10 percent pellets now.

Glad someone finally mentioned nightcrawlers; Oscars love them. We also gave them the occasional slivers of beef heart. And feeder fish fed a healthy portion of spirulina flakes. "Swimming salad".

I don’t feed my fish beef heart. Not even small slivers. It might be ok in moderation but there are more natural options readily available that I prefer to use.
Additionally, there was one food I forgot to mention before It’s not really for my O’s but they still relish the opportunity for some frozen/thawed silversides. I mainly feed this to my catfish, but oscars don’t miss anything they gobble up a few each time.
