I'm going to switch from a gravel tank to a sand tank. I was just wondering what you think is the best type of sand. I mean, in terms of looks, easiness to maintain, price, affect on water quality, etc. --- what is the best type of sand for the buck?

Im not sure exactly whats best but I use whats called river sand. Its got a real natural look to it and is pretty inexpensive at about 65 cents/lb. One LFS i go to in san diego uses it for all their tanks

Alot of people talk about 3m Quartz sand "S" grade. Never really used it before, but everyone talks about it.

Pool Filter Sand found at Leslie's Pools. $9 a bag and it looks nice.

i use pool filter sand and river sand

i use colorquartz. heavy crystals that never float in the water....

I agree. It looks great IMO, its heavy so I havent had issues with it getting in my filters, and its cheap.

i like play sand. 50lb bag for $4. personally, i dont like the color of pool filter sand, too whitish.

and 65 cent/lb for sand is just ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
