whats the best way to collect gar? i found a hot spot for spotteds and longnose but its near a dam lol and if the turbines are turned on it would be bad to be down collecting them and have to
evacuate

where are you located?

dip net at night works well...you can shine them with a flashlight (small net for small gars, long-handled net for larger gars). ...of course electrofishing is cheating...--

Never did have any luck with electrofishing for gars during that trip. :( I might have to put together my own unit...

You can frequently catch gar....and this method will be specific to landing gar ONLY....you do not even use a hook. Rig a fishing rod with a minimum 12" steel leader....attach a 6"-8" piece of yellow nylon braid rope that is 1/2" diameter.....put just enough weight between the leader & the rope to slowly sink the rope. Cast and let it sink...let it sit for a while....slowly retrieve ...then cast again, etc. I have used this method in the Ohio river below Markland Dam, and like all fishing sometimes you get some; sometimes you don't. The gar gets more hung up the more he bites & thrashes due to his teeth sinking into the nylon rope. Sometimes they re almost impossible to untangle so wear gloves !

that's it, I'm gonna get a dip net, fishing for gar in my area take like forever and I get nothing after a lot of time trying.

i am in georgia but will be collecting in alabama and i think you can only have one per day if i am not mistaken i know they do have a limit on the gator gar but i am after longnose or spotteds.

Bring someone along to spot them with a spotlight so that your hands are free for netting the gars.
it's a game of luck, in that muddy water I can't see a thing. All I can do is wait until they come up for air and throw the net.
