What's the best wolf for a community tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The gold I have is the biggest prick of all fish I own. Absolute terror. Maybe 6". Only keep him with large ATF and rays now.

I have an Intermedius that won't eat when communed with other wolves. Tried 3 times. I'd give him the crown of least aggressive wolf in this house..... Australis seem very mellow as well but I am unaware of someone to second this. Vincent has a large Int. as well and reports his to be very docile as well. These wolves get big too.... Like Lac/Aimara big, so that's a huge plus too if you're looking for a gentle giant.....

That's more along the lines I was thinking... a gentile giant is what I'm looking for. And hoping it doesn't become a terror

They're all pretty similar, just depends on the individual. I agree with koltsixx. They're not that territorial but when something messes with them they develop a dislike for it easily and there aggression will grow for that fish specifically and they handle it as they please ime. I've kept ery ery, ery Peru, mala, curu, and hoplerythrinus all in comm separate times. only one curu and gold however. I have them together now. The curu doesn't bother with tankmates, sometimes he gets annoyed and will put in a little chase here and there, the only one he fights with is the odoe, they don't like eachother. The gold follows the odoe around a lot. Especially when scared during water change time. I had a mala with him and he beat on it. Mala ended up running into somehing breaking its jaw and passing. Malas aren't bad ime, they don't like something being directly in front of their face, they'll move it. Ery species are wimps compared to hoplias. Not as capable. Same with the gold, not as capable but more so than ery. My gold did fight with my odoe when I first got it, odoe put it in its place fairly quick. Fight probably lasted 10 seconds then the gold ran.

What tankmates is it gonna be with so we can get a size bracket kind of thing and go from there.

Probably wanna steer clear of ery. Golds is doable if you can find the. At a good size or grow them up. Depends what's 18" as largest gold in aquaria was mynheer_a_pint 14" one. I'd stick to hoplias. I'd say any would work.

Hoplias sp. is what I'm interested in. I should have been more specific

for a community i would suggest a ery sp. but really each fish is different.
my smaller aimara is ok with other fish where as my large aimara is a
absolute nightmare to everyone including myself and needs to be solo.
my other wolves are ok with each other besides the mala being a little bit
territorial some times but no damage is ever done just a little chasing.

I'd say pick the one you like the most then. Because no matter what it'll be a risk. It will come down to the specimen you get. Atleast get the one you'll be most happy with.

I current keep a community with a brycon, 4 gold wolves, curupira, intermedia, two Oscars, Florida softshell andt wo bristlenose plecos. Both hoplias get along great with everyone very peaceful infact. The Oscars rule the rank and the brycon terrorizes my golds. I know most people have experienced golds as *******s but mine have been kept in a since they were born and are the biggest pussies. They only fight among themselves.

Well that's how shoaling species work lol and since you're one of few that have succesfully had a group, and the only recent one, everyone else keeps them alone which in turn makes them aggressive. It's what I've always read about shoaling species, they're aggressive when alone, since shoaling is their usual way to stay safe, they use that as a way.

Mines isn't really aggressive, though he came in aggressive and got put in his place a few days in once the odoe got tired of him, he never challenged the curupira. And the sun cat and him just did the little flapping motion a few times but never more. And he always left the bichirs alone.
