SO CALI
i was just wondering whats the largest size tank someone has put on a second floor. i live on a second floor of an apt building and i have a 75g tank but i wanna upgrade to about a 150-180g. do you guy think this would be a safe thing to do? Please let me know.

Thanks

not safe...........go ahead and pour a 5 gallon bucket out on your floor, see how much that sucks.............now imagine that 36 times on your neighbors floor below you................unless you own the place and dont care about flood damage, dont do it....I would be a little ticked if 180 gallons started to pour through my ceiling!!!:D

yeah man not safe unless our apartments is like super industrial like a new school. one of my moms colleagues has a 125 on the second floor of the school.

biggest I have on an upper floor is a 72g. Had to put my 125g in the basement. I have noticed water changes in the basement are a lot easier! The lower door on the 72g stand is starting to rub against the top of the stands frame. It's been setup for over a year now and just started to rub. I think the tank may be sinking on one side. Keep that in mind if you are placing large tanks on upper floors!

hi i had a 125 tank on my second flr. apt. i put it along a supporting wall. that means a out side wall. i had no problem , but i did have my worries. i don't have it now it in the cellar. if i was going to do it again i would make sure it a new tank.

Most rentals don't want you to have more than a 55 for various reasons.

Your 75 is like 850 filled (water stuff & stand)
a 180 is about 2100 filled (water stuff & stand)

most 75s are 21 inches high (20 inches full)
the 180 is what like 25 (24 full)

your 75 has a foot print of 6 sq feet (4 x 1.5)
the 180 foot print is 12 sq feet (6 x 2)

850 / 6 = 142 pounds per sq foot
2100 / 12 = 175 pounds per sq foot

I weigh 190 pounds & my feet together are 1/2 sq ft

190 / .5 = 380 pounds per sq foot

I am not saying go for it, and all the engineers here will tell you the floor WON'T hold.

I myself have had 20 people in my living room at an average over 150 each (3000 total)

My water bed is 7' x 6' x 8" (210 gallons), then park me & the wife on it. with the frame and head board you're looking at over 2100 pounds.

I guess I am saying, do you feel lucky?

In short, I advise against anything larger than the 75g. but it looks like I don't take my own advise.

If you do it, then dont let anyone play DDR in the roon.

DONT DO IT - DONT DO IT - DONT DO IT - DONT DO IT - DONT DO IT

You need to take a peek under the floor (rip it up and put it back if u can) make Sure u have tji braces. These braces can hold alot. We are Building a house right now that has these tji on a second floor its above a garage which is realy wide open. They are spaced out about every foot. The ower are plannning on a full bar/pool table plus other Stuff. So take a look inder the flooring and If u know anything about lumper or what your looking for let us know :)

what the Hell....just set up the 180<<<<live a little!

We talk about this all the time here !!! It all depends on how the building you live in is constructed, ask 100 people living in different houses in different parts of the world and they can give you 100 different answers! It really all depends on the individual construction of your building, I hear that the average bathtub holds near 80 gallons but the floor may have additional bracing to deal with this extra weight, tanks are extremely,EXTREMELY heavy and bear down on a small area 24 hours a day, also imagine what a mess a downstairs tank makes if it leaks, now imagine if it was leaking from upstairs! I suggest that a 75 gallon is a SAFER limit for an upstairs tank, if you do want to go MONSTER upstairs I suggest learning a little more about the construction of your building! PS. don't let your neighbors or your Manager see you carrying that baby up the stairs they may freak out and tell you NO! My building doesnt want tanks upstairs and told me the limit was 30 gallons, for a ton of reasons I just wouldnt go over 75 myself, I am just trying to be patient because I look at it this way, If I am still living in an apartment and don't own my own home yet, should owning a 1,000 gallon tank be my top priority? Heck who knows!? This is MFK after all !!!!! :screwy: :screwy: :screwy:
