What's the coolest top water level fish? (Besides an arowana)

Let's say you have a 240g tank with mostly bottom dwelling fish and you want to get a cool top level fish that isn't an aro. What would you get?

does it have to be a strictly top water fish or can they roam a little more? also, what tank mates will be with him.
why no aro?
butterflies are cool, they don't really swim around much though.
gars, i think, might be the best. cause its hard to get bored of them.
archers spend a good part of their time up high.

but we can't really give suitable suggestions until we know what the tank mates will be.
