I think it is pretty simple really...

If after cycling, one always has measurable ammonia and nitrite, you need more filters or reduce stock
If you have increasing nitrates even with regular WC, increase WC, reduce stock or add plants. Regular filters won't help in this situation.
If you sleep and dream of goldfish, I still say a couple of channel cats will cure this condition.

Though I love channel cats, i will keep them on the leash as they say

The goldfish most likely will, unless they are terrestrial plants with only roots immersed in water and protected by something...

Pothos are great, even when the roots are snacked on by the fish.

Dude, i'd run 4 pool filters, in line.

if you are going to over filter, why not go sump or wet dry, might save an amp or two from all the HOB filters.

The problem with sumps is, well... maybe your right... i guess i just don't trust my design skills. That and flooding the basement.
