Whats the DUMBEST fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had an apple snail that dove out of the tank. Yes snails can jump... or at least fall out of their tank. It sounds so loud though.

Funny lots of people mention goldfish as the dumbest fish but the fish that knows the most tricks is a goldfish named Einstein.
Nature vs Nurture ?
No dumb fish just no good teachers?
things that make you go hmmm.

Well, I have been thinking about the for a while, Oscars just won my vote along with my GT, Silver Dollars, Sailfin Pleco and Chocolate Cichlid. I just came home and turned the light on, which casts very little light on the tank and get done every single night. For some reason all the fish freaked, starting with the Oscars and continuing from there. From what I can see, with out adding light cause they freak more (don't know why?) one Oscar looks hurt kinda bad along with the GT and Choc. The two new filters I put in yesterday a stuffed and now unplugged. Stupid fish, they all get my vote, we will see how they fair in the morning.

Not that I don't support guppy, goldfish, and oscar (all are good nominees for the category), but I'm going to nominate my full-grown silver dollar - because if he purposely flings water on me one more time . . . :swear:

Dude that sounds like you caught them looking at a porn mag or something(guilty reflex action):D

Eh - I have 2 snails that get more action then I do - they don't need porn.

i think carp are one of the dumbest fish. they only think about food, no matter what. seeing them get anesthesised, tattood, revived and eating withing 30 sec must put them in category: not the brightest fish.

pacu are up there for me. Put a good lid on, they mysteriously commit suicide in the middle of the night, and flop to places you can't find them till you move to a new house. Found 2 mumified pacus under my tank stand last time I moved. Mystery solved. Lid was weighted, they juped out the 2" slit in the back between the filter and lid. Go figure. Don't really know if it's dumb or their instincts telling them to find a bigger water source, but seems dumb when they have their food handed to them instead of having to find it on their own. I second dumb goldfish though. I love how they swim straight for large fish when you put them in your tanks. They look suprised when they get eaten lol. You know they are dumb when they peck at the mouth of something 2' long and they are 2" long. Ahh memories, I now don't feed feeders unless they are quarantined and fattened for a few weeks.

I love my goldfish but yes they are stoooopid! Ive actually had to perform a fish variation of the heimlich quite a few times to get gravel dislodged from their mouths. Not just on one particular fish either, multiple fish have done this repeatedly!
And snails! I too have had them get stuck on the filter intake and die. What mystifies me is how 90% of the time they can get on it and clean it off and then move on. But now and then somehow they get stuck and get sucked in. They also crawl out of my tank and my dog gets them. Fortunately he brings them to me and if its not to late I can put them back inthe water, but theyll do it again!
