What's the fascination with polypterus

Bichirs are very interesting specimens. You won't see the beauty until you own it. They make personable pets.
At first, I didnt liked them and even plan on selling them. But, when I realized their beauty, I cared for them and cancelled the offers that others are giving me for the bichirs. Now, they even make me hand feed them or even pet them. Such good fishies!

I saw my first Sen. at Petsmart (the infamous dinosaur bichir!). I bought one for my tank and saw they get way too big for a 26Gal :( So once life situation changed I have a 55Gal fall into my hands and knew that was the first fish to make the tank. Then came the Palmas Poli and ropefish. And here the other day when to the "rare" fish store and found some 2.5" dels .....guess who has one of those growing out as we speak =D Just the fact that the pattern isn't so clean cut for me. They have a rough tough look to them. Not to mention drop the food opposite side of the tank and watch the patrolling continue! They are just bursting with personality and when I show people them they can't believe they are actually fish!

I just have a thing for the ancients (no room for arowana or gars) so Bichirs will do for now. Thanks to this site I have plans for a 450-500Gal tank that will house all 3 of these ancients, because the fact that they've got the tools to still exist today is neat as hell to me.

Several reasons.

I like weird, unusual fish.
I like the way their "spikes" display along the back, it really enhances the primitive, rough fish look.
I have two, a Senegal and Endli. The Senegal is extremely active.
I think my Senegal has ADHD, I need to feed him Ritalin.
The endli is just awesome. I really like his coloring. The protruding lower jaw, and the eyes on top of the head make him look alligator like IMO.
He's fairly active too, but the way he camouflages himself in the plants, gravel, driftwood, and lies in ambush is quite amusing to me.

Right now I have two fish that eat out of my fingers. My shovelnose sturgeon, and the senegal bicher.

The bichers have staring contests with me.
The motions they make when swimming around are just fascinating.
