What's the hardiest fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IME Jack Demps. When I was like 8 we had one that survived in the absolute worst conditions and was still a killer. Sure was stunted though.

Whenever you read threads about tank disasters where things go bad and nearly everything dies, there always seems to be a pleco or convict that survives, so I'd vote for those 2

can the hardiest fish be linked to the crappiest keeper?

Strange, that was kind of my first thought. Ever notice how people who don't know about water changes always have a big common pleco still living in the tank after everything else has long died off?

A cynical person could look at this thread and wonder if the OP is too lazy to look after fish properly, so wants to know what doesn't require much care. I hope that wasn't the reason for the question

My thoughts exactly. In the abandoned 50g tank I got recently, the only fish in there (hadn't eaten in a month) were a large 12" common plec, and a gibby half that size.

Their payoff for being so hardy and surviving that neglect was to go into an MFK members pond :)

I have what I believe is a 2-1/2" bluegill from the platte river. It jumped out of the tank onto a concrete floor. I took it for dead seeing how dry its skin was... I picked it up and 1/2 of its tail fin stuck to the floor breaking off because it was so dry. I noticed its gill flaps twitch a little just before tossing in the trash and couldn't believe it was still alive!

Almost immediatety after putting it into the tank its gills started moving but other than that it seemed like the rest of its body was dead... I waited about an hour and after it still wasn't moving its body I took a stick and forced its body to bend thinking it might help get things going again. It twitched its tail a couple times and after about 5 minutes it was swimming again but took 1/2 hour before it could swim really well.

That was 4 days ago and other than some fin loss it seems to be fine! I have no idea how long it was on the floor but it was long enough for the mucus on its skin to be dry enough that it was brittle!

i'd say walking catfish
They could live almost everywhere and can survive long periods being out of water
