Whats the harm of MTS?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I’m thinking I got some MTS on a supposedly snail free java fern from Petsmart and I like them. I have a breeding colony in one of my 20’s and my 125 rbp tank. I see them out every once and a while but I don’t see any harm in them. I am debating getting a few clown loaches or a smaller ray for my 265 and I could use them as a food source as well. I really don’t see why there is so much hatred.

In addition, the mts stir up the substrate, as stated, and oxygenate parts of the substrate where anaerobic bacteria might begin to grow. With this aeration, however,(the bacteria can't grow. That's a good thing tho, cuz the anaerobic bacteria release a toxic gas which upon stirring the substrate can be released and is harmful to your fish

Besides the appearance of 1000s of snails. Nothing much. I've find them in my canister filters, but no damage done as far as I can see. They borrow through the sand and if you have black sand, they can definitely be a distraction from the appearance of the tank. I have a Botia to keep it under control, but it doesn't make a dent in the population. I also don't have any plants in that tank anymore.

I put four MTS in my mbuna tank...they were all eaten before they hit the sand. Well at least they were free
