Most of the time, if I buy enough the shipping is free, or pretty small

At this site, shipping for my salt (200 gallon Instant Ocean) is $9.99

That site often has shipping for less.

There are a few sites that have free shipping, but you have to watch for extra charges related to weight.

:S wow, 200 gallons of salt? . .. .. .. Definitely staying FW.

Glad to hear some people direct some of their hard earned money to the LFS instead of always saving a couple bucks going on line.

I usually buy food the most online. I go nuts, I usually buy from Big Al's, if it's over a certain amount it's free.

buy online:
> lighting (bulbs and fixtures)
> large filters (cannisters)
> water treatment in bulk (2L Prime, for example)
> fish that are hard to find
> plants that are hard to find
> substrate (as long as shipping is free)

buy in-store:
> fish food
> small filters (AC20/30/50)
> fish
> plants
> media (mainly filter fiber)
> clearance items and special deals

I don't mind buying online for bulk and/or more expensive items, because most places I buy from are either free-shipping, or the shipping is so low as to be immaterial

whenever possible, I buy from my LFS first, even if they are slightly more expensive. it's on those items they cannot get, or where their pricing is out-of-line that I shop at Big Al's or some other place . . .

Yeah ,the charges for the weight is what I was really wondering about.

The last time I bought salt, from that site I mentioned they had cut shipping down to 5.99 and there were no charges for weight.. (I got the 200 gallon size)
