There are a lot of construction factors that go into the answer. How it is braced and what kind of safety factor you want. If you are willing to except a safety factor around 2.5 you could probably do it in 3/4" glass. If you drop the height 6" the safety factor in glass goes up considerably. In acrylic you might be looking at 1.5 ish to go 36" deep. Please keep in mind this all still depends on type and quality of construction. I recommend you research some of the tank calculators on the net and the assumptions made when creating the calculators. Might even talk to a custom builder and find out what they would use. I WOULD NOT JUST TAKE MINE OR ANYONE ELSE'S WORD FOR IT ON A FORUM!
3/4" at 36" deep with a 8' span would make me nervous, I feel like that would be pushing it. Probably would work, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to go a bit thicker.
