whats the minimum tank size for a male dovii

it seems like common sense that a fish of this eventual size would need a tank larger than 180(in the long run)

I mean you can go to petsmart and their helpful employees would tell you that you can house a pacu in a 30 gallon for the rest of their lives but doesn't make it true.

If your business is selling fish, thats what you do for money. you don't get a lot of dovii sales by telling people they need 180 gal+ tanks.....or oscar, pacu, iridescent shark sales....doesn't make it right, just the unfortunate way of the world. So don't allow individual comments from people/vendors make decisions for you.

I totally agree! If you don't own a tank larger than that then You shouldn't purchase a Dovii

I've have never owned one but have seen several adults. None of them looked or acted particularly happy in any aquarium that wasn't at least 8' X 2.5'. Even then they tend to ram the glass and act crazy. They seem much more suited for huge 600g+ tanks or ponds. The only ones I have seen that were not going crazy when you walked up with in public aquariums or ponds. Then you can see there natural behavior

If you walk up to the tank and the fish instantly starts ramming it that means the fish thinks you are in it's territory. Meaning that the tank is not nearly as big as the area that fish in the wild would protect.

Personally I think 8'X2.5' would be the absolute minimum if you want to have a happy healthy fish. Sure you can have one in a 125g if you want to do water changes all the time but the fish is not going to act natural or happy.

Mel's is in a 600 gallon with just a female and he's knocked all his teeth out on the acrylic trying to bite you. So if you're going off of the personality, even 600 gallons wouldn't be enough.

I have kept fish longer than you have been alive. I have kept an bred many cihlids, even paired up my own, did not buy them that way. Can even ID a female convict...............

I am saying, not that I really need to explain anything to you, that until you have kept a mature dovi, how do you know it requirements, more of "The vendor told me so". IT is called experience, in 10 years you may have some.

Armac I noticed something about you , you never post any fish(Dovii and ......). However you always have alot to say about other peoples fish, let the O.P benefit from seeing some of your experienced fish in there tanks or tank, lets keep this positive

That Vendor was Jeff Rapps and I believe he knows what he's talking about,

He's also in the business of selling fish. If he told everyone who inquired about a Dovii's minimum tank size that they needed around 300-600 gallons - I can't imagine he'd be selling that many.
