Yeah, I've heard of some expensive discus pairs for sale at $500. And there are also flowerhorns that have sold for thousands of dollars even though they are hybrids.
I don't think flowerhorns should be considered. They are just fluffy overpriced show fish. My vote is wild petros, discus, azul cichla, theres a new pike that went for over $1,000 a piece. It's all about what will be paid for said fish.
If we are talking individual fish rather than proven breeding pairs, and are excluding Flowerhorns as well, then the definite answer for "what is the most expensive cichlid at the moment" would certainly be wild caught Petros.
Just to chime in, the most expensive Cichlid currently available locally through our biggest supplier is an $80 discus, followed by a $70 Crenicichla sp. Atabapo II. Uaru fernandezyepezi is only $60!
Those aren't for adults or breeding pairs or anything... There's a proven pair of wild caught festae with an asking price of $500 available here right now...
Oh, and the most expensive fish currently through the same retailer is an extremely rare African spiny eel...
Rosette Eel, Mastacambelus sp. "Rosette" LAKE MALAWI, 7-8", $200.00
There is a new species of pike cichlid that just made it into Germany and they are wholesaling for $1500 a fish. Retailers are listing at upwards of $3k.
I know they're African, but adult Frontosa often go for over $100. The most expensive I've seen in person at a store was a $500 male Flowerhorn and $400 female. The female was still there last time I checked and I don't know whether the male sold or eventually died.
