Whats the most "Monster" Nano fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would only get 2-4, technically it’s 5 gallons per puffer and if you want other fish then less is better. They are nasty, juvies in store are tame, as they age they get worse. Only have 1 male (or none) in the tank. Good tankmates would probably be rosy red minnows, Pygmy cories, larger shrimps/snails, fast schooling fish. The dwarf puffers are super aggressive so nothing is 100% safe.

This is awesome information, thanks to everyone for helping out! Here is my general stock list:

Dwarf Pea Puffer - 3
Pearl Danios - 5 -10?
Otocinclus - 3
Neon Tetra - ?
Neocaridina - ?

I'm gonna have a HOB filter, probably the mainland bio-wheel rated for 50 Gallons, and have the tank be plant-heavy, any and all advice is welcome!

I’d probably start with 10 shrimp. 8-10 neons should be good (watch out for neon tetra disease). 6-8 danios is fine.

There's a real good chance for the puffers to eat the shrimp. I would stick to the puffers, danios or tetras, and otos.

I think it was bluesandtwo who kept them with cherry shrimp.

Kept with general success. I've seen no baby shrimp despite females with eggs... and I would never actually know if they ate any adults. But I'm confident I have at least 20 healthy adult shrimp out of the 30 I brought some time ago. Equally I rarely see the puffers hassle the shrimp. When a puffer does get a bit too close, they simply power-shoot backwards and out of view safely.

Hope that helps?

Hey Guys,

Quicks question, what would you guys consider as the smallest, most aggressive, "monster" type fish I can have in a 20G? Looking for something that doesn't get big but also is more aggressive than most other fish. Of course, I can see some answers quickly being a beta or a ram but are there any other cooler more niche alternatives?
From my experience a dwarf red eye puffer. Here’s a vid of mine eating, they get around 1 3/4-2” but are straight up beasts
