I offered a homeless, abusive, mentally "off" dad free babysitting for his 7-8 yr old kid, because I was suspicious. not to be nice. LOL.
It took some time to gather details from the kid about their vagabond life & places, working manual labor Ag jobs (kid worked too), not attending school, and what state his mom lived in & part of her name.
I gave all the info to authorities, saying I was sure the dad wasn't supposed to have the kid.
Quick investigation found: dad abducted the kid at 2 yrs old & stayed on the run ever since.
Authorities gave us emergency foster care until mom could fly in state for the kid.
They gave the mom our phone number. she called and just cried & cried, thanking me over & over, talking about all the years of "almost" finding him but they vanished every time. She was terrified that the dad would come to our house & take him again.
I assured her "Honey, we have dogs all around this place, guns if needed & 911 in a tiny town. cops would arrive in minutes. No way he's getting to this boy". but she was so scared, I promised to keep him inside with us at all times :-/
I've never heard such pain and excitement, all mixed together at the same time. It was humbling to hear.
Soon after, we were privileged to put him in a social workers' car, headed for an airport to meet his mom & fly home to Indiana.
He had a birthday party, brother & grandma. and got the thing he told me that he wanted most of all: to go to school.
It was a long time ago, but I'll never forget listening to his mom.
