just a regular ornate with great colors

I see. I was pretty skeptical.

External gills huh...it would be hard to mix that guy with anything.

Maybe I can have my friend smuggle one back for me from Japan... yeah right.

this question has come up before, you can do a search on the forum. But heres a version of what i said before.

Rarest (contenders):
a) P. bichir bichir - definitely rarest outside japan, as theres not a single verifiable specimen outside japan. However, it's available in japan since late 2002/early 2003, and the japanese have recently succeeded in breeding them.

b) P. ansorgii - also very rare. only a few places worldwide have imported them. Keep in mind, they debuted in the hobby some time in 2006, and before that, for close to a century, only a few museum pickled specimens were known. So that puts a different perspective on this species.

c) P. teugelsi - very rare as well. new species described in 2004, became available in 2006/2007. again only a few places worldwide have imported them.

in short, excluding Japan, rarest would be bichir bichir. But worldwide, including japan, i'm not sure how the numbers stack up, as (a) is being bred in japan now, but (b) and (c) are not at this time. On the other hand, there're more wild imports of (b).

thefishguy7 has a teugelsi
He has a vid on youtube of it.

PO. Bichir Bichir is not really rare anymore.
Not common, but not difficult to get if you have the money.

Same goes for Ansorgii and Teugelsi too (IMO).
