Central and South America is covered in lime green 'estes' gravel. They sell it for $5 a bag at petco....
Alternatively, you can't go wrong with a mix of fine gravel and sand (light colored), some slate and a few nice pieces of drift wood.

Went to every Petco around. The lime green must be in-demand. Was sold out everywhere. They did have 1 bag of rainbow left, but sadly the solitaire bag wasn't enough.

Go with a bag of white sand

I went through a lot of different looks and styles for my SA tank but hated the majority of them. I finally decided on a great look that is very pleasing to my eyes. I just have lots of driftwood and caves on quikrete play sand (kinda a white/light brown color). This is the look I think of everytime I hear South American or Central American. I know they are very different from each other but I will just go with what soothes my brain and eyes. It was very irratating going through a million different looks and hating them all but one. Good luck! I recommend sand and driftwood.

You can pretty much do anything is my point.
Central America is more alkaline than SA and I would imagine you'd find a more rocky lime stone substrate. Riverine fish would most likely have a silty bottom littered with large rocks and/or boulders.
South America I would think more heavily planted with a muddy or boggy floor. Lots of decaying wood and plant matter,etc...
Just my guess based on what I've seen and read. I'm sure that there are exceptions, omissions, and flaws to what I've said but considering that I've never been to that part of the world (neither have most of our fish) I don't think that's so bad.

I have always just used natural small gravel, a couple fake plastic plants, driftwood, made caves out of clay pots. It's a personal preference too for sure of what you like and want. And there are inexpensive ways of doing it, it just depends on what you want in your tank for decor. I have seen some ridiculous stuff in peoples tanks that i'd never do, but it worked.

Exactly the same as the Africa / Asia natural habitats are like. Only a bit different :nilly:

Hey guys & gals,
Did a little searching on google last night & come up a little short. I'm setting up a 120-gallon & was unsure of their natural habitat. Is it rocky like some of the Africans? Tree branches & such? I will have SA & CA in the tank, so I'm aiming for something that will kinda be suitable for both if there is such a thing. Any help is appreciated.

Where does one get pool filter sand???
