IMO 180G minimum for FL/spotted gars. They will rarely get over 2' in aquaria so 2' wide tank is ok. You could even maybe get away with a 150G 5x2x2 I suppose...a 125 won't be wide enough though.

While I would never want anyone to get a young gar with the intentions of trying to stunt it, I have the most adorable Florida gar in a 70 gallon tank. He is about 13”. Gary is at least 20 years old and seems very healthy. He was given to me by an older man who adopted him from his son back in 1991. The fish was supposed to have been 3-4 years old at that time. Before Gary came to live with me he was kept in a 30 gallon tank (I can’t imagine that). He looked fine when I got him this time last year… he hasn’t gotten any longer but is definitely fatter now. I hope he lives forever since he is our class pet and has won the heart of all who know him. Even students who are no longer in my classes stop by constantly to see (and feed) their favorite fish.
Haven't been here in weeks... and I'm not good with posting much of anything. I don't have pictures but do have a video I just uploaded to flickr so maybe you can see him there http://www.flickr.com/photos/palegreenmoth/4455230913/
Remember he's old, once the feeder gets behind the filter he gives up for a bit.
