What's the smartest fish you have ever owned?

My Brandti Piranha is probably the smartest fish I've owned. He's done some strange things and killed a few fish by getting over the divider only when I was on vacation, never when I was home for 6 months in a row. Guess he waited for me to leave lol

My crayfish so far he paddles a floating piece of dritwood around the tank to collect floating food.

My professor is a fish neurobiologist. He always says that the cichlids are very smart...for non-reef fishes. He's thinking of working with them because they're so easy to collect/breed. After performing a lot of fish brain dissections myself, it's true. Triggerfishes have really impressive brains....while the brain of a frogfish (angler) is really, really tiny.

Bichirs are dumb too. Without knowing much about its brain though, I would say my TT eel is pretty smart. However, oscars may take the cake in my book.

Size isn't all of it though, it depends what it's for. Some mormyrids (elephant-nose fishes) have a brain-to-body weight ratio larger than humans! However, it's mostly to operate their electrical organs. Usually intelligence is measured more by the telencephalon, which is like our cerebral hemispheres (the things you see when you look at a human brain).

Wehad a whole tank of various cichlids that seemed to watch tv with us. Never could tell which shows they liked the most though.

You know this is going to sound crazy but ther smartest fish I have ever owned is my blood parrot Charlie. He looks at me when I look at him. At night when Im wathcing moves in bed he will stay still and look at me. He knows when Im going to feed him. It just seems like he is connected to me.

fire eels, tire track eels, large cats, african cichlids. Oscars and goldfish are smart.. but like most dogs are smart.. they are fairly easy to train.. but lack problem solving brains as a general rule.

Have to say Oscars are my choice smartest most personable fish I've ever owned tho I do have some plecos that run a close second.
