can I just ask why is this and the SW version in the lounge? both are fish related debates

Because of the fact that these are endless discussion threads. Its a fun subject to talk about, but these threads don't really contribute anything. They belong here in the lounge.

it is the ultimate monster fish debate, and it took 38 pages and 8000 views before it was decided to be moved

Other than some of the larger specimens of Goliath grouper FKA (Jewfish) which are only found in saltwater the Nile Perch has to be the ultimate freshwater gape and suck predator. Huge fish with cavernous mouths.

any evidence these can take down paimas wels and GATF as such?

He was quite specific in that he was only referring to suction feeders, so its ability to kill a GATF, paima or wels isn't really relevant.

I agree 100% with Aquanero, Nile perch are the undoubted king of the suction feeders.

woops, didn't realise, I agree with that those lovely suckers. but as it is in the lounge, will spam be allowed or will it be deleted?

really think kaluga sturgeon should be here, yes thy're suction feeders but they do have some teeth but considering they allegedly get 20 feet long and over 1 metric tonne in weight they could probably take just about anything short of the larger predatory sharks

I mentioned Beluga's, they would mess up almost any freshwater fish if needed.

Awsome fish. Looks like evolutions version of a freshwater whaleshark or a catfish sturgon hybrid. It is interesting how evolution fills eoglogical niches and the way convergent evolution adopts seperate species to similar life styles and body structures.

Pole, here is somthing on Gape and suck predation: http://courses.washington.edu/fish311/FISH 311 files/010-Feeding II_notes.pdf

If we're including anadromous fish, they're definitely something to consider!

Damn that's an impressive fish. They definitely do seem to be something like a freshwater whale shark analog. Neat stuff like this guy is why I love this hobby.

Now if I could only figure out a way to keep an adult kaluga...
