Is there a reason why it would be terrible for water to exit there? Seems serviceable to me.

Oh, I see now. The bottom is the intended course for the water. Then your mystery hole would be an emergency route if your bioballs get clogged, as suggested above. Took me a sec there!

I don't know any name or maker, because it was in a local ads for $140. Is it even worth buying?
 
You can make one out of a Rubbermaid tote for much cheaper, however buying something that is already designed and built as a sump is always nice. Plus it already has plumbing fittings...

I'd offer much less though, I don't think it's worth that much.
 
$140 is not a good deal. I would be thinking along the lines of $50-$75 for that. Of course, I'm not in Canada either
