I have this beautiful piece of driftwood that has this cottony white stuff growing on some parts of it.I have had it for a few years now and I first saw this stuff about a month after first adding it to my tank.I removed the wood and scrubbed it down with a green pad and left it to dry and just about forgot about it.Fast forward to about a week ago when I placed the wood in a tank for soaking so I could use it for my main tank and this stuff has crept up again, after all of the time that has passed.Does anyone know what this stuff is?

I wish I could help you. I just added some new driftwood to a tank and have the same stuff. I was gonna take it out and scrub it down. I may end up baking it in the oven at 200 degrees f for an hour, if I don't hear any other better ideas here.

It seems harmless but I don't like the looks of it and I have never seen it on any other woods.

I had this in my mudskipper tank that failed...Because of this. My mom couldn't stand the little puff balls that looked like jay leno's hair...

So I have no idea what it is. I think its the type of wood....Is the wood completely covered in water?

It's harmless, if you have some algae eaters in the tank they will mow it down in no time. You can scrub it all off but it might still come back just not as much until something eats it all off.

The first time I used the piece it was completely submerged and this time only the tip of the wood is out of the water.

Its the beginnings of algae. Let it run its course.
But it's white and my fishroom is not the most well lit area...I don't keep my tank lights on very much.

Try completely submerging it and it should go away...

That won't work because the first time it appeared the wood was submerged.

Doesn't matter. You need more than light for algae. It's a form of algae, there isn't much you can do. Wipe it off and hope it doesn't come back. I like algae though especially that kind. Make the tank looks more natural. Nothing wrong with a clean tank, but I hate the hospital looking tanks with all new plants and no algae anywhere.
