What's this thing?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Kelly, the purple thing looks like a kind of worm that lives in the rocks and extends it's feeding tentacles out to the surrounding area. Touch the tentacles and see if they retract or not.

Kinda looks like feather duster worms too. Or possibly a vermetid snail

My first thought was feather dusters. I'll go poke 'em now and see what happens. (Truth be told, I was gonna poke em earlier but wanted to know if he would hurt me first, lol)

...............

Well....He's harmless. I moved the rock and found another TINY limpet. Yay!! Just seems to be on the one rock (so far) but didn't so much as twitch when I was pokin and proddin it or when I moved the rock. Almost like its not a critter at all...Huh...I'll get a pic in a sec.

Possibly a sponge then

Some of it is purple cyanobacteria and coral eating white worms - 4 guesses at the rest - either aussie purple tube worms, purple tube anemone's, juvi Bonaire purple sponges, and or saltwater hydras

slime blob!!!! Either way, it's ugly, scrub it off it it does not develop into something more attractive. But give it time to see what it becomes.

Krustyart - Its not slimey. lol. Its something else...I will wait and see what happens with it. Its out in full light now too, so it might grow faster. I found it while moving rocks around looking for more Plauge-Vermin...

Coral eating white worms?? What are those? (google - no help...) And also, googling "Saltwater hydra" got me a yacht and as awesome as it would be to be growing a sea-faring vessel in my bedroom, I don't think that's what you were shooting for. hahahaha. So is there another name or do you have a pic of one so I can compare?

And I didn't think I had any cyanobacteria. I thought the smaller purple splotches on the rock were coralline algae. Or did you mean the big purple thing in question...Kinda lost me there...lol. I suppose they could be the same...Cyanobacteria and coralline algae...Never heard em interchanged before but I have not until recently heard of aragonite sand and crushed coral being interchangeable and they are the same...Hmmm...

Purple tube nem didn't look right, but just in case, I'll look into its compatibility with my percs. I am rooting for the bonaire sponge! lol.

Thanks for the homework, OtherOne! I appreciate it! (I think that came off wrong...I wasn't being sarcastic there...)

Okay using the last pic only - on the top of the rock there are 3 squiggly white things they are I hope white worms and not poop, because if it is poop your fish are infected with internal parasites probably tapeworm.

The purple slimy stuff on the top right infecting the entire right side is cyano.

To the left and middle the tubes sticking out are the unidentified organism.

Ohhh...Ok. Thanks for clarifying. That hydra thing looks neat.

It looks like the purple pokers are growing out of the cyano, and are part of it. I had just assumed they were the same organism, hence the questions. I think the white things are baby feather dusters. I've got them on the glass in my feather duster colony too. Are they not and should I be concerned? I'll watch the fish for white poop though. :)

Sorry for all the questions - Just want to be as specific as I can so I fully understand. Thank you so much for your patience and info!
