threesome of banded acaras with tetras and cories? i always regretted not getting my banded acaras their own tank setup. now ive only got one left.

checkerboard cichlids, blue acara, royal acara, port acara, flag acara...a lot of smallish-medium sized cichlids to choose from. you could add some assorted rams as well if you were going for a sort of cichlid community.

if you could find some, pick up some nannacara anomala. i really love those little guys.

The problem with the post above, with S American species, is that they prefer low pH, mineral poor, soft water.
Tom's suggestion of small Central Americans is more apropos (the only cichlid I believe would be proper for a tank that size would be Amatitlania nanoluteus), or some of the live bearers such as mollies or swordtails. Some smaller species from the rift lakes of Africa would also work, coming from water where pH is high, and mineral rich.

did he say somewhere he had high ph? i missed that.

Cichlids are pretty hardy when it comes to PH. A consistent PH is more important to them than trying to match a certain ph. Also remember the majority of cichlids we keep are tank breed and not wild caught so they have been raised and accustomed to the local water quality/ph. With that said... PH is not really the issue IMO, the tank size is the main issue with trying to keep cichlids in a tank that is only 30" long. The only cichlids I would suggest for a tank that small would be something like shell dwellers. Other than that you would be better off with some sort of community fish.
