He has been growing nicely, eating well, not fighting, very active, and it seems happy. Now he's got some black patches on his side and the ends of his fins are black too. Is this normal? He seems perfect in every other way, and no other fish in the tank have any issues. Anyone know what this is?

Completely normal, he'll grow out of it A's he grows..

I know of a friend who had a 3" completely black red devil.

Perfectly normal, your fish is simply still producing melanin, which may come and go for several months as it matures.

Yeah midevils randomly change colours untill they get about 7"+ then its usually clear what the adult colouration will be :)

They go through this color change as they age.. as long as everything looks great.. not to worry..

usually say, if they are mostly dark orangey red, they will stay somewhere close to that colour, with black and white coming and going. the black and white are the most changeable aspect of their colouration. it can be very interesting :P
