What's with live feeders

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We don't intentionally use live feeders but on occasion the fish have other ideas. My wife reciently recieved a shipment of baby Pbass that we put in the 45 gallon corner tank to grow out. The tank is set up for angels and also had a few guppys and a couple of blue crays...I say HAD because the tiny Pbass managed to eat all but one of the guppys in two days even though they are about the same size. By the same token the two crays managed to scarf down a couple of the baby Pbass and had to be moved to another tank.

We do however agree strongly with the variaty feeding methoud and do everything we can to get all of our fish used to accepting a wide variaty of fresh, frozen foods.

i feed them goldfish and live shrimp, sometimes mosquito fish but only as a treat...i get them to accept non live food such as market prawn, pellets, market fish, blood worms, and even bananas for my lung, i never use raw chicken or beef cause i dont want a salmonella or ecolli outbreak on my tanks..i get them used to the prepared food cause its healthier for them...:)

the problem is not "live feeder fish". the problem is what KIND of "live feeder fish".

goldfish are not nutritious and very prone to parasites due to the conditions they're raised/kept.

in the wild, predators that prey on other fishes will likely eat a wide variety of "ilve feeder fish", while in the aquarium, the most commonly available feeders are goldfish and minniows which are as good as you eating letteuce.

its not that goldfish are not very nutritious, because they are just as nutritious as any other feeder fish. The difference is that goldfish contain high quantities of thiaminase, an enzyme that destroys Vitamin B1 and when fed in large quantities causes nutritional imbalances.

I some how got my payara eating krill and shrimp but i can't get my cuda's too so i have to feed them live feeders? i just look for little fish that are cheap and give them a treat once and a while.

I don't feed live feeders very often to my fish. Maybe once a month or two. But right now I got some baby Dats that I'm trying to grow out and live feeders help them grow fast. From personal experience, live feeders makes little monsters become big monsters faster than pellets and beef hearts.
