I hear of people flushing cichlid fry or using them as feeders because they are hybrids.

I think fish are still fish regardless if they're hybrid or not...am I missing something here?

ppl in the hobby of fish keeping want to keep the pure species of fish available... when you mix fish and sell them or give them away as pure that impure strand will be mixed with pure inevitably killing the pure nloodline of the fish at some point... i love Hybrids but some dont the same way some love SH and some hate them for there invasivness... to eachs own... just breed hybrids and make sure there is no mistaking you lable them hybrids...

some people like pure bloods, not mud bloods ( Hermione Jean Granger). it's a in purity of fish. but i like fish the can breed with a different fish.

well a lot of cichilds are great as they are we want to keep the line pure, it will be very hard down the road to find any kind of pure cichild if we keep crossing them why not just keep flower horns?:D

They are still fish, just not what someone was wanting or expecting

I guess it would depend on what the hybrid is. For people who take their breeding seriously, keeping a line pure is very important.

For example, the Victorian Basin Cichlids are endangered. Making hybrids of these fish, and then distributing them, could muddy the bloodlines to the point that no true blood of these species exist, anywhere. Not in the lake, and not in our tanks.

The next problem with hybrids is aggression levels. You may not know what traits will come out in a hybrid. You may have one that goes on a killing spree, and empty your tank.

A lot of species are really cool enough, without having to make hybrids. Keeping hybrids is a personal choice, but distributing them without knowledge is unfair to the people that would purchase true blood fish.

I happen to have made my own hybrid and it is gourgeous. Yes I have sold them to LFS and we labled them HYBRIDS with the mix and ending in my last name. To tell you the truth I am a believer in keeping lines pure but if you get a pair of cichlids that Hybidize then all the luck to you. I was just fourtinate enough to turn out with an amazing Vieja Brodouri X Jack Dempsy mix. I have never seen a Vieja with such intense blues. My only draw back is now the daughter of the mother is more attractive then the mother so she has been completly ignored by the Vieja male that I intended her to mate with and he is now showing intrest in the offspring hybrid.

More power to you for creating something beautiful. I personally don't have a problem with KNOWN hybrids. I think everyone is entitled to like a fish, regardless of genetics. What you have and what you like are just fine with me...but if I want to put it in my tanks is my choice.

I give you a lot of credit for calling it a hybrid, and distributing it as such. A lot of fish keepers wouldn't care if it was a hybrid or not, it's a fish, a pretty one, and they either like it or not.

the problem is that most hybrids in the hobby are not known hybrids...instead it is yellow labidochromis hybrids that someone buys from an assorted tank and then breeds with their pure labs, and then distribute the fry as such. With all these species disappearing, wouldn't you want there to be pure species still around.

I think tho that one needs to balance having a species-only tank, with having fish that look good together., and won't hybridize. Being careful with your species selections, having correct male to female ratios, and paying attention to your fry are all important things when you decide to breed.

Another thing I've been told by a reliable source...hybrids don't necessarily know what they are, so they will tend to breed with anything. They may not recognize what female they are SUPPOSED to breed with, and will just breed.
