What's Wrong with My Glass? !

Glass doesn't cloud from the inside, you are mistaken about something.

It's likely the answer has already been said, but what about is there a protective plastic cover you never took off?

No, that definitely hasn't been said before. There was never a protective plastic on the glass. There is a distinct feeling and sound when metal touches glass that I experience when I used the scraper I mentioned.

What I should add is that this is a Top Fin tank from PetSmart. I was just getting into the hobby and I was looking for something affordable. I wonder if there is some inferior process when they made the glass that might be the reason.

If it's something with the glass itsself, then my only solution is a new tank--and that's not going to happen any time soon. :-(

Have you tried using a single edge razor blade? It should remove any 'film' on the tank glass, including algae or the whitish deposits caused by hard water.

It is possible the glass has developed the cloudiness due to etching but it is normally seen on much older tanks, especially ones that usually had a lower water level and were not cleaned regularly.

Joe's links in post #11 could offer some helpful answers.

If its only on the front pane, are you able to turn the tank around and make the front the back, and the back the front?

Thanks for the tips. After I said it was only the front glass, I looked closer and it's on the sides too--just not as bad. I don't know what the back looks like because I have one of those decorative liner things on the back. The tank, with everything in it is close to 700 pounds anyway--so spinning it isn't an option at this point.

My first post was for lime deposits under a different forum and they said a razor too. What I got has a blade on the end of a long handle, but it's not as sharp as a razor. I think I might try that. I would be shocked if the blade made absolutely no mark in the film at all if it is deposits.

I'll let you know how it goes. Wish me luck!

Buddy, you nailed it with the 2nd link. I guess I have glass disease. I tried a single edge razor blade today and what I see is not on the glass itself--it is within the glass. I guess I'm out of luck. I guess I have to buy that 150 gallon tank I've always dreamed of--yeah, like my wife will go for that right after I bought a brand new PC. :irked:

FWIW--I emailed PetSmart where I bought the tank. I'm not expecting much. Now that I know what it is, I'll do a search and see if there is anything I can do. If I have to clear out my fish and drain my tank, I might as well get a new tank anyway--but I gather it is a permanent problem and would probably come back if there was a solution anyway.

Thank you for the information. I'm going to speculate that Top Fin probably uses inferior glass. I know that might sound like a flame, but I'm just trying to learn from my mistakes here.

Thanks much!

Does it go away if you wet the outside glass?
