What's wrong with my Green Terror (he's sick)?...

Your fish died of internal parasites. The clear poop is evidence of the internal parasites. They waste away until they die.

What kind of parasites? Would they be contagious? If so, what can I do to protect the other fish in that tank?

Is it normal for parasites to kill a fish in 12 hours? What I mean is he was healthy and eating normally, then I notice some clear poop. Twelve hours later, he's dead. Literally, in 12 hours, he went from a healthy fish eating and swimming normally to dead.

That doesn't sound like "wasting away" to me, but I don't know very much about illness. I've only ever had one other fish die from illness in the last two years. It was a female Red Devil that had been attacked by a male RD in my friend's tank. I took her in to try and save her, but it was too late and she was too beat up and stressed. I've been lucky I guess.

But please help and offer suggestions, I don't want to lose my Jack Dempsey and the Synodontis I bought last night. Thanks very much.;)

Local fish store guru (in the hobby for 20+ years) says the GT may have pooped out his swim bladder. He claims parasites is more of a wasting away over time versus a quick degradation of health ending in death (12 hours in my case from healthy to dead). He says the swim bladder explanation also makes sense because of the sinking to the bottom, unable to swim.

I'd like to be relieved that I don't have to worry about my awesome JD and a parasite infection. What say you, genious hive mind that is MFK? Could the fish store guy be right? Everything I've found in searches say that clear white poop is indicative of parasites, but they don't result in a quick death as in my case.

Thanks again.:)

The clear poo looked more like white, stringy poo, which is a sign of internal parasites. If this ever happens again, add rock salt and raise the temperature up a couple degrees.

Here is my GT ..open mouth..took him out .kept wet cloth around his gills and used tweezers and opened his mouth and found a piece of plastic plant lodged in his throat.. pulled it out and put him back..mouth still a little swollen but other wise back to normal..any possibiltiy he tried to eat something that he could not eat and it became lodged in his throat?? Sorry you lost this beautiful GT:(

This is the same information I've found searching but the timeframe contradicts cases of parasites. Parasites lead to a "wasting away" kind of condition over a period of time from what I've found. This was a period of 12 hours from healthy to dead.

Wow, that's a story you don't hear every day. I would've never thought to check for anything like that. I don't think I have anything in the tank he could eat besides food. All the plants are real (anubias) and the substrate is 3M Color Quartz, too small to choke on I would assume.

What do you think about the fish store guy's explanation with the swim bladder? And thanks for the kind words.;)

I think he ate something too big..maybe too much food eaten too fast..they are almost starving at most LFS stores.. he may have had too much in his mouth.. i really do.not think any parasite infection would get him so fast definitly would show signs early on and not sudden death.. so sorry. Are there any still left at your LFS..they may replace him.

Thanks again for the kind words. The store did offer to replace him. The sudden onset and quickness of death make me want to believe it's not a parasite problem, but I don't know. I guess time will tell, I'll have to wait and see if the Jack Dempsey shows any of the same symptoms. I sure hope not, he's beautiful. Check him out...

He is gorgeous..try and set up a 10 gal tank and use it as a quarenteen tank when you purchase a new fish.. leave the new fish in for two weeks.. so that if the new fish has anything u will know it and not risk all your beautiful others.. and you can use it as hospital tank in case you need it..
