Could have scraped himself. Bad water quality will only further infect his wound. Every 2-3 day water changes, 30-40%. Add aquarium salt. Some people say table salt, i say not. Even if it's non iodized. If table salt was fine, than why would they make aquarium salt, plus its cheap.

They make it for the same reason they make most of the other crap people buy in this hobby... because it makes the company money.

OP, get your water tested. Doing water changes helps, but you have no idea how bad it is. Regardless of whether or not this started with poor water quality, it's getting worse due to poor water quality. If you don't get him in some clean water soon, this is going to require an antibiotic. If you fix water quality, his immune system will help him heal on his own.

He's actually looking better now. The redness has subsided. But, I'm still going to treat him with paraguard.

He appears to have gotten ich from all the stress.
